What Parents Tell Us
What Families Ask Us Most
Does my child need a formal diagnosis to attend READ Academy?
No. Many of our students come to us without a formal diagnosis, just a long pattern of struggle and the sense that something is not adding up. We can help identify what is going on through our assessment process, then determine the right placement together.
What if my child has not been evaluated yet?
If your child does not have a current psychoeducational evaluation, we offer a comprehensive dyslexia assessment that evaluates for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia using standardized tools and developmental history. This is usually the first step before placement so we know exactly what your child needs.
Who conducts the assessments?
All evaluations and assessments are personally overseen by founder Dr. Leah Skinner. She holds a Doctor of Education in Reading, Literacy, and Assessment, a Master of Education in Dyslexia Specialization, and certifications as a Dyslexia Therapist and a Special Education Advocate. She has spent over a decade evaluating and teaching students with learning differences.
Tuition and Funding Pathways
There are multiple paths to becoming part of READ Academy, and full-time day school tuition is only one of them.
Annual Day School Tuition
$25,000 per year, structured to give families flexibility. Tuition is paid in 10 no-interest monthly payments from August through May, with first and last month due August 1. Mid-year enrollments are prorated through June, and there is no annual contract.
If Private Tuition Isn’t Within Reach
We know specialized education is a significant investment, and we know it is not within every family’s reach. Public school districts are responsible by law for providing every student with a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). When that responsibility hasn’t been met for your child, there may be a path for the district to fund placement at READ Academy. Dr. Leah Skinner is a Certified Special Education Advocate and has guided dozens of families through this process.
Beyond Day School
If full-time enrollment is not the right fit right now, students can receive specialized one-on-one instruction through our sister organization, READ Learning Center. Many families start there and grow into day school when timing works.
If you are unsure whether tuition is feasible, start the conversation anyway. There are more paths than most families realize.
When can my child start?
We enroll students throughout the year, not just at the start of a new school year. If timing does not line up with a school placement and your child needs support right away, we can bridge the gap through one-on-one tutoring at our sister organization, READ Learning Center, until a spot at READ Academy opens up. Start dates are decided during the placement conversation.
How long does the process take from first call to first day?
It depends on what your child needs. If you already have a recent evaluation, the process can move quickly. If a dyslexia assessment is required first, plan for several weeks between initial conversation and start date. We will give you a realistic timeline during the first call.
What if my child is significantly behind grade level?
That is exactly who we are built for. Most of our students arrive years behind in reading, writing, or math. Our job is to meet them where they are with instruction that finally matches how they learn, not to make them feel further behind. Grade level is not a barrier to admission.
Will my child be able to return to a traditional school later?
Yes. READ Academy is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC), the same body that accredits public and private schools across California. Coursework, grades, and transcripts transfer cleanly to other schools, colleges, and universities. Students stay on a fully recognized academic path.
Do you only support students with dyslexia?
No. We work with students who have dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges. Many of our students have more than one of these. The instructional model is built for students whose brains process information differently, regardless of the specific label.
What happens during a tour?
Tours are by appointment so we can give your family our full attention. You will sit down with Dr. Leah Skinner, our founder and a Doctor of Education in Reading, Literacy, and Assessment. She talks with you about your child, walks you through how READ Academy works, and answers your questions directly.
During your tour you will also:
- Step into classrooms and walk the hallways
- Hear about our committed and caring teachers
- Have time to ask questions about academics, student life, and programs
We encourage you to bring your child if they are old enough to participate in the conversation about their own education.
What if READ Academy is not the right fit for my child?
We will tell you. The point of the early conversation and the records review is to determine fit honestly, in both directions. If your child needs something we cannot provide, we will say so and try to point you toward the right resource. We are not interested in enrolling a child we cannot truly serve.
How do I get started?
Call us at (916) 258-2080 or send a message through our contact page. The first conversation is short, focused on your child, and not a commitment. We will listen, ask a few questions, and tell you honestly what we think the right next step is.
