Why Choose Read Academy?

Choosing the right school for a child with Special Educational needs is one of the most important decisions that a parent will ever make for their child. It can be the difference between them finding success amongst their peers or struggling to keep up with the pace of their peers. Making the right decision is tough because no matter how much you want your child to learn like other children, a mainstream school that offers learning support may not be sufficient for your child’s educational needs. Opting for a school focused on specialized instruction may ultimately benefit your child more.

This is where a school like READ Academy of Sacramento plays its part. Offering a unique educational experience designed to enhance the intellectual growth of a dyslexic student proves itself to be one of the best decisions that a parent can make for their child. However, we understand the reluctance to make this decision. In order to facilitate an informed decision, we have compiled a list of reasons why we think you can put your trust in us to help you build success in your child’s education and in their future.

Assessment:

Have you ever wondered why your bright and capable child struggles with reading, spelling, writing, or math? Read Academy will use your child’s developmental and educational history along with current standardized assessments to complete a thorough evaluation to determine if there is a learning disability like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia that is impeding your child’s academic success. This is extremely important to know because it will help you understand where your child stands on the ladder of standardized norms in order to enable your child to achieve success at school through research-based appropriate educational methods.

The Qualifications of the Teaching Staff:

Read Academy proudly hosts a staff of 12 teachers who have the desired knowledge, educational skills, mentorship skills, and experience in the field. Our teachers are passionate advocates for children with dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia who go out of their way to help their students at READ Academy to find success and to flourish.

Self Esteem

It is important for every child to feel comfortable, confident and to have their moments to shine. Whether through sports, arts, music or other areas of interest, all students need an area where they perform exceptionally well in order to boost their self-esteem and for their confidence to soar. We understand this need and support our students to discover their talents and hidden potential.

Encouraging Curiosity

At READ, we encourage students to ask insightful questions and confront conventional ways of thinking. This encourages them to think out of the box and helps them excel in their academics as they explore new learning methods. We also encourage students to explore disciplinary boundaries so that they can become independent thinkers in charge of their own educational curiosities and opening new ideas to support their future interests.

Curriculum:

Designed to promote participatory engagement from the dyslexic stars of our Academy, we utilize research-based, evidence-backed curriculum that ensures that each child grows academically. Our curriculum includes:

1. MMR

Making Math Real is a multi-sensory structured methodology that allows students to experience the hands-on application of mathematical rules. It integrates key cognitive elements while providing vast knowledge of the subject to students of all ages and abilities.

2. WRS

Students struggling with a learning disability often find it difficult to learn to read and to spell through conventional teaching strategies. Focusing on that, the Wilson Reading System is designed to enhance reading and spelling abilities of students through a direct, explicit, sequential, multi-sensory technique. The program focuses on all age groups, starting from grade 2 through adults and is based on phonological-coding research to teach students English language structure systematically.

3. IEW

The Institute for Excellence in Writing provides students with systematic and sequential instruction to guide students to become proficient writers. Students with dyslexia often struggle to express themselves through writing but IEW helps guide students to become more eloquent and persuasive in their written expression through guided instruction and a variety of topics to pique their interests.

4. MBP

Moving Beyond the Page is an approach to learning Science and Social Studies that encourages students’ critical and creative thinking skills. In addition, the program provides project-based learning opportunities allowing a dyslexic learner to engage through hands-on experiences. The program is easily modified for reluctant readers and writers to learn age appropriate content material the way they learn best.

Bell Schedule

Our bell schedule is designed to give students enough time for all kinds of activities, including academic learning, physical education, social interaction, and snack/lunch breaks. The 60-minutes of time divided into two recess breaks gives students enough time to build their social skills and take part in healthy activities, enhancing their emotional growth. In addition, 45 minutes per day is dedicated to physical education; an interactive session that most students thoroughly enjoy. In addition, we offer 135 minutes of Language Arts, 45 minutes of Mathematics and 90 minutes of Social Studies and Science. The 6.5 hour schedule is designed to help students feel comfortable, to encourage learning without pressure to meet the standardized norms and to help students reach their fullest academic potential.

Tutoring and Summer School

In addition to a full day program, READ Academy also has a sister company that provides an after-school tutoring program, a fun summer school and intervention Fridays to help students who are either homeschooled or go to public school and need some extra assistance. These are focused on 1:1 or small group instruction so that individual attention can be given under the guidance of our well-trained staff.

We, at READ Academy of Sacramento, understand your concerns when considering alternative placement for your child. We hope that our research-based, evidence-backed curriculum taught by highly trained and qualified teachers, as well as the well thought out school schedule will not only convince you to entrust the responsibility of your child’s education to us, but will also help you understand the importance of specialized learning opportunities for your child’s academic success.
